SOL: Day 3~ The Beach

The Beach

Glistening in the sunlight

The ruffles on the water

Seemed endless

As my feet felt the cool, prickly sand under the water,

My toes disappearing in the little ice cubes of sand,

Seaweed is slinking along the sides of my ankles

Back and forth with the water

Then the feeling of ice rushing onto my legs

As I stand in the freezer for the first time

It is not quite summer yet,

Not a soul as far as the eye could see.

Dreaming of the warmth and hot sweaty days,

Pulling my jacket tighter to my body,

So close I can feel the days running off the page,

When I can return my feet to their free feeling.

I walk to the lonely car in the lot,

Knowing that soon, it will be filled with many others just like mine.

Longing for the sound of whistles blowing and people talking,

I step into the warmth of my car until another day.

  1. It has been years, and I mean years, since I have been to the beach. My wife is fair skinned and burns readily, But your poem does make me long for the sand and surf. Maybe an evening stroll when the sun is not at its peak.

  2. Yup. Love it and can totally relate to this post. Just last weekend I was in Cape Cod and put my feet in the sand and in the ice cold water!! :Can’t wait for the summer and the sun, but there is something so peaceful about the beach “off season” when nobody is there but you. I love the line about the lonely lot that will soon be filled with cars! Thanks for sharing.

  3. The beach is my happy place as well–the one and only place I can sit and do nothing. Just be. Just breathe. Just watch the waves disappear into each other and into the sand. Thanks for taking me there with your slice of a poem. 🙂

  4. This is a second slice about the seaside. Both as poems. Each different with carefully chosen words that create images. I miss the beach. Waiting for the summer.

  5. I enjoyed the alliteration of your poem… all the S sounds in slinking seaweed and toes disappearing…
It’s been years since I’ve gone SWIMMING in the ocean. I think that is the best massage the Earth can give you. It’s on my list for 2017

  7. I can feel your anticipation of summer in this piece. My favorite lines are these:
“So close I can feel the days running off the page,
When I can return my feet to their free feeling.”

    Nicely done.
