In this class…

The first week of school is always stressful. The newness of everything, setting routines, what to expect, getting to know your kids, learning their strengths and weaknesses, and getting yourself in a routine.

I, currently, am still not in a routine. I feel like I am just barely staying afloat about the water. I feel like I am accomplishing things in my classroom, then I talk to my other team teachers and they are way ahead of me and coming up with all these good ideas.

When am I supposed to have time to come up with good ideas ? Our free time is the end of the day and , teachers, you know that at the end of the day you want to do nothing !

And here comes Friday, coming up on a full week of school, the first one yet, and most of us will be freaking out about what In the world am I supposed to teach next week ?

So many things so little time….

Are you feeling this way after your first week of school ?

  1. Hi there
Reading your post made me think about the exact same feelings that I experience when I’m back to school after a long break.
Where do I begin? Will my students remember the previous chapters or will it be back to square one?
Nice to know there are other teachers out there who experience the same trepidation.

  2. I always feel that way at the beginning. Good ideas are great but you have to figure out what works in your classroom. I have had to change many things that I do with my students or assignments based on what kind of a group I have.

  3. I hear you. On all of your points. I often wonder how some of my foreign language colleagues come up with such good ideas. I mean, do they eat, sleep and spend time with their families??? LOL! For me, school has been in session for four days. The first two days, I dragged. Felt much better yesterday and today. I think it’s because I had not taken my multivitamin for about a week, and was finally able to get to the store on Wednesday, and resumed taking them again on Thursday.

I agree with Depressed Christian: Each teacher has to sing according to his or her own song. A wise Spanish teacher told me that about ten years ago, when I was struggling in my practice.

    • I totally agree with you. And the first two days are hard and do drag! Setting up routines. Blah lol. But I guess I am struggling with wanting to be a team and do things together so essentially it’s easier and im not really getting that

      • I hear you re: being a part of a team. I really do. Being a team player isn’t one of my major strengths. For the simple fact of the matter that early on in my teaching career, i.e. the first five years, which are the formative and the most critical years, I had no mentor, no real training, no support, nobody who took a real and true interest in me. So, I forged my own path. Which is truly the proverbial double-edged sword. On the one hand, people want you to be independent, to not bother them, to figure things out for yourself. On the other, after saying all of the aforementioned, they want you to be a part of their team. Which is often dysfunctional. Bleh. But, you’re much younger than I am, and, I recommend that you find ways to work with your team in ways that make the most sense to you, i.e. there will be compromises on your side, and, on their side.

  4. Oh I’m so sorry to hear you are feeling that way after your first week of school. I always loved getting to know the children and establishing routines. But I had always spent much of the holiday break in preparation. Dare I say, I loved it! I hope you settle down soon and start to enjoy.
